A few years ago, I was doing some research and stumbled onto the story of what, according to Orthodox church tradition, ended up happening to the nameless woman we read about in John 4, who encountered Jesus at a village well. Though she fades out of the biblical narrative after her encounter, the woman—whom Jesus’ disciples apparently re-named “Photini” (“bringer of light”)—went on to become a formidable force for the gospel and, eventually, both a missionary and a martyr.  It’s a fascinating story and I hope you’ll grab a copy of the book and learn more for yourself!

Encounters at the Well is a nine-session devotional Bible study for women, suitable for either individual, one-on-one, or small-group use, based loosely on this account. Since I started posting about the book launch, I’ve received so many heartwarming messages on social media, reaching out with encouragement and excitement and letting me know they’ve ordered their copies on Amazon, or sharing testimonies of how God has worked in their lives as they’ve used it. One woman told me, “In our group, we’ve never been so transparent and gone so deep with each other and the Lord together as we have using this study!”

My aim in writing and releasing Encounters at the Well is to equip women with the biblical tools they need to overcome some of the emotional and spiritual issues we all deal with, and to live free in our heavenly Father’s love. Each session guides readers through a series of reflections, discussions, and practical applications to help uncover and apply life-changing truths found in Scripture.

First, you’ll hear a bit of Photini’s story, and learn how Jesus met her in her brokenness and offered her “living water.” This section will help readers understand the importance of encountering Jesus in their own lives and experiencing the transformative power of His love.

Subsequent chapters delve deeper into common “heart issues” such as insecurity, rejection, shame, and comparison. Photini surely experienced these, as her story indicates, and so do we! Through biblical teachings and personal reflections, these chapters will equip women to recognize areas in their life where they have been wounded, or are believing lies about themselves or God, and replace those hurts and deceptions with the truth of God’s Word and His over-the-top love for them.

For those who are doing the study with another person or a small group, the “Circle of Sisters” section at the end of each chapter provides a framework for sharing insights and experiences, supporting one another, and growing in faith and a personal walk with Jesus together.

My good friend, Cheryl Sacks–my co-author on Prayer-Saturated Kids and most recently the author of Fire on the Family Altarwrote the foreword for Encounters at the Well, and said:

“We all want to experience the freedom we know is ours through Christ Jesus. But for many of us, the way to freedom seems confusing and intimidating, even a bit scary. You will not find that to be the case as you experience this devotional. It is filled with the love of the Father. You will hear His gentle voice calling you to let go of the old ways—cycles of fear, abandonment, intimidation, bitterness, and other destructive patterns.  Through the pages of this book, you will learn to walk and live in a fresh new way—one that leads to life and life more abundantly.”

My prayer is that Encounters at the Well will be a life-changing experience where women meet Jesus personally, like the woman at the well did, and experience the living water He promises. I hope it inspires, informs, and equips every single woman who reads and engages with it as she embarks on her own road of joy and freedom!
